IJBuRG Waterdwelling
The IJBurg Waterdwellings are a densely populated floating community in Amsterdam. The neighborhood is structured around a grid of floating docks. However, the units are placed with slightly varying heights, orientations, and distances between them. This gives the community an organic layout, and ensures each home has a unique view of the surrounding water.
The lowest floor of each house is partially submerged in water, and each house is 3 storeys. Modules are prefabricated, then floated into place on site. There is a lot of ability to customize this basic module to meet the needs of each inhabitant. The houses come in many different floor plans, and the modular steel wall panels can be configured in a variety of ways to allow the user to dictate where windows are placed. Extensions to the base module, like awnings, verandas, and sunrooms, can also be attached.
Residents of the IJberg community have many ways of enjoying their waterfront homes. Every house has a boardwalk along all sides, giving the residents space to relax by the water. When the weather is warm, they enjoy swimming in the river, and when it is cold, residents can enjoy ice skating.
