AMPHI NEST
The Amphi Nest is a prototype amphibious pavilion developed in Kerala, India by Nanma Gireesh and Ben K. George. After the region experienced catastrophic flooding in 2019, the two began developing an amphibious construction style that could use local techniques and materials to improve flood resilience. For Kerala’s residents, many of whom live by the water, such a strategy is very important.
The pair were inspired by amphibious architecture in the Netherlands. Like many Dutch projects, the pavilion uses a hollow concrete foundation to provide buoyancy, and is held in place by 4 steel guidance posts. Because it was a prototype, it was placed in a concrete base that could be filled with water to conduct tests.
Concept designs to build amphibious homes in Kerala have also been developed, and Gireesh and George are now raising awareness about the possibilities of amphibious construction, with the goal of constructing 10 amphibiated homes for people displaced by flooding in Kerala.
